During Freedomfest, the annual mega-conference held in Las Vegas each July, Reason magazine Editor in Chief Matt Welch sat down online-gambling enthusiast, 2008 Libertarian Party vice-presidential nominee, and Conscience of a Libertarian author Wayne Allyn Root.

In a fast-paced and wide-ranging conversation Root examines the failure of the Barr-Root ticket to generate enthusiasm even among LP members, why online gambling (though admittedly a "minor" issue) is the gateway drug to increasing the number of small-government voters, and why California's political and economic meltdown is the model for a series of rolling "economic catastrophes" that will hit the rest of the country over the next few years.

Approximately seven minutes long. Shot and edited by Dan Hayes.

More fun with Wayne Allyn Root: While running for the LP nod in 2008, Root, along with Bob Barr and Sen. Mike Gravel, discuss the "Future of Libertarian Politics" in the Reason DC HQ. Watch it here or click below:

Now is the time. Libertarian Presidential candidates

Ads by AdGenta

I just wanted to take a few minutes to invite people to get involved with two Libertarian Presidential candidates. Wayne Root, the 2008 Libertarian Vice Presidential candidate and Ton Knapp the Editor of Rational Review, among many other things. Both candidates have announced that they are seeking the 2012 Libertarian party Presidential nomination. Take a minute to get to know the candidates and get involved in a campaign or two. I for one am excited about another crowded race for the nomination.

Wayne Root
from Wikipedia

(born July 20, 1961) is an American entrepreneur, television producer, and best-selling author. Root began his career as a professional sports handicapper, based in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was the 2008 United States Libertarian Party vice-presidential nominee. He is currently considered the frontrunner for the 2012 Libertarian Presidential nomination.[2]

His political talk radio show,W.A.R: The Wayne Allyn Root Show is broadcast in New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago. Root is also a regular guest on several of the most popular nationally syndicated radio shows in the country such as Savage Nation with host Michael Savage, The Jerry Doyle Show, and Mancow's Morning Madhouse with host Mancow Muller. Root is seen frequently on FOX News Channel with hosts Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly and Neil Cavuto. Root has also made numerous appearances on FOX & Friends, the FOX News national morning show. He has also become a speaker at Tea Party events across the country.[3]

At the 2008 Libertarian National Convention, Root was eliminated on the fifth ballot in a bid for the presidential nomination, but then became the vice presidential candidate alongside Libertarian nominee Bob Barr.

Tom Knapp

Announcement of candidacy

I initially planned to announce my 2012 candidacy for the presidency of the United States on April 6th, 2009, from the steps of the Old St. Louis Courthouse (history buffs shouldn't have too much trouble figuring out why), and I still intend to conduct a campaign event of some kind at that time and in that place.

I see, however, that others are already lining up with formal announcements or at least clear indications of their own intent ... and when a fight's brewing, I prefer to get in early.

It is therefore my distinct pleasure to announce that I will seek the 2012 presidential nominations of the Libertarian Party and the Boston Tea Party.

Why run for president -- and why, especially, for the presidential nominations of two parties which together usually account for less than one percent of the popular vote in presidential elections?

I could give you lots of reasons, but I'm going to stick with three for the moment: There are some hard truths that need to be told, I'm interested in telling them, and they're most effectively told from a bully pulpit.

Among those those hard truths are that the political wing of the libertarian movement will never make substantial progress toward its goals so long as it clings to the apron strings of the failed movements and parties of the past, remains in orbit around the present political "center," or falls prey to cargo-cultish notions of what constitutes "serious" politics.

If we want a libertarian future, we must create that future, not hope that our political opponents drag us along to it. They won't. They're not going in the direction we want to go in, they have no desire to go in the direction we want to go in, and to the extent that they're interested in us at all, they regard us either as fuel to be consumed or ballast to be dumped overboard at the earliest opportunity. I don't blame them. We haven't yet given them reason to regard us as a true threat to their power. It's time to change that.

As my friend and mentor L. Neil Smith once observed, "great men don't move to the center, they move the center." It's a big center, folks. Moving it will require a long lever, with us at the far end. I don't claim to be a great man ... but I hope to be part of a great movement, and to help that movement get further out on the lever and put some weight on it.

Insofar as cargo-cultism and "seriousness" are concerned, rest assured that I have nothing against suits and ties, friendly media interviews and the other requirements of realpolitick. What I do oppose is the absurd notion that waving around "mainstreamism" like some kind of voodoo fetish will magically boost us to competitive stature versus our older, more established opponents. It won't.

The future of the libertarian movement, if it is has one, requires a principled populist approach rooted in class theory. Not the theory of the socialists (labor versus capital) or of the liberals and conservatives (ad hoc identity politics adjusted to appeal to society's phobias du jour), but rather the theory of the productive class (those who make their living through work and voluntary exchange and cooperation) versus the political class (those who siphon off as much of that productive activity as they can get away with, using the coercive apparatus of the state, for their own ends).

For these reasons, the first phase of my campaign will largely be internal to the parties and the movement; as we move on, it will become more outwardly focused, of course, but first things first.

My fundamental goal in seeking the nominations of the LP and the BTP is not to achieve those nominations or to be elected President of the United States. It is to help the libertarian movement outfit itself for a journey yet to begin -- a journey which that movement has stood stock still at the starting point of for nearly four decades now. If I achieve that goal, the nominations and the election results are of secondary importance, as I'm certain others are at least as qualified as I am to march at the front of the column. If I do not achieve those goals, then the nominations and the election results will resemble John Nance Garner's description of the importance of the Vice Presidency of the United States: "Not worth a bucket of warm spit."

I look forward to an exciting campaign, and I humbly request the support of all who value the future of freedom.

RunRandRun.com - A money bomb for Rand Paul - US Senate Race

Ads by AdGenta
Text taken from The Humble Libertarian

Digg it

How exciting! Rand Paul's run for U.S. Senate representing Kentucky is a phenomenal opportunity for the liberty movement that rallied around his father's presidential bid in 2007-08, which Congressman Ron Paul rolled forward into a perpetual Campaign for Liberty that has made serious leaps and bounds towards an audit of (and eventual end to) the Federal Reserve Bank.

One of the crucial elements of Ron Paul's success was the sheer size and determined tenacity of his grassroots support, which focused their efforts into two meteoric money bombs in November and December of 2007. It is in that spirit and for that purpose that the organizer of both those money bombs has put together RunRandRun.com to raise Rand Paul $1,000,000 in one day on August 20th.

As a poor college junior, I donated to both of the original money bombs because I believed in Ron Paul's message of limited government, strict constitutionalism, and individual liberty- and in the flawless record he had of upholding that message through ten terms in Congress. I also knew that the statists in both parties who were vying for the presidency would take a lot more than $100 from me, and that they wouldn't ask nicely when they came for it. I was making an investment in my future.

Two years later, fresh out of college, and just as broke while I wait tables in Nashville, volunteer for political causes, and work hard to grow my website, The Humble Libertarian- I have pledged at RunRandRun.com and will be donating $100 (or more if that's what it will take to hit our goal of $1,000,000) on August 20th. I implore you to do the same if you have not already done so. Visit the site and enter your e-mail address right now with the firm resolution to whip out your card or Pay Pal account on August 20th and drop a $100 bomb on tyranny.

This is such an amazing opportunity because it is a perfectly winnable seat. Open seats like this are very rare and Rand Paul is in a good position to win the Republican Primary in Kentucky and then move on to a General Election victory in 2010, putting another Dr. Paul in our nation's Capitol- a very young, charismatic Dr. Paul with many years of good work supporting liberty ahead of him. But Rand Paul CANNOT win without your donation this August 20th.

His main opponent in the Republican Primary is Trey Grayson, a big government, "country-club" Republican with deep pockets and powerful friends in the Republican machine and Washington establishment. If Rand Paul raises $1,000,000 on August 20th, he'll sail past Grayson in fundraising totals and have the budget to buy the mailers, radio ads, and newspaper ads he needs to raise his name recognition and profile in the state of Kentucky- which is absolutely necessary for victory.

If Rand Paul does not raise $1,000,000 this August 20th because you sat this one out, he will be playing catch up the rest of this primary season, and may or may not win- a risk we would be crazy to take! In total, our movement raised over $30,000,000, towards putting Ron Paul in the White House, even though we knew it was a long shot. Let's just raise 5% of that this August 20th for a U.S. Senate seat we know Rand Paul can win!

Again, I urge you- visit RunRandRun.com right now (you can come back to finish reading this article; it won't go anywhere) and pledge to donate your $100 on August 20th. Your support does matter and will make a difference. This is an opportunity to send a message loud and clear to both Washington and the Republican Party- "FREEDOM IS POPULAR!" Americans want to live in a free and civil society governed by the U.S. Constitution. This is also an opportunity to send a message to someone else...

August 20th was selected as the day for the money bomb because it is the birthday of Congressman and Presidential candidate- you guessed it- Ron Paul. Let's send him a message too: that we believe in the cause he's fighting hard for, and that we will also fight hard to send him like-minded, liberty-loving allies in Congress. He has fought this battle alone up there for too long! Want to give Ron Paul the best birthday present he could ask for this August 20th? How about a Dr. Paul in the other house of Congress?

And last but most certainly not least- after pledging at RunRandRun.com, please do just one thing to promote it to the people you know. Unfortunately, many of Ron Paul's avid supporters are still unaware that his like-minded son is making a bid for U.S. Senate and needs our help. All it would take is to make them aware, and they would be glad to drop a money bomb on August 20th. So please do at least one thing to spread the word.

E-mail one friend right now who doesn't know about the Rand Paul money bomb and urge him or her to donate. Or you can link to RunRandRun and Rand Paul's campaign website on your Facebook wall. If you're a blogger, please use one of these banners in the sidebar on your blog site. You could also Tweet about the Rand Paul money bomb on Twitter, Digg up the money bomb on Digg, or leave a comment with a link to the money bomb page on a liberty-related YouTube video, blog, or message forum.

As of this writing, there are just under 2,000 pledges at RunRandRun, and we need 10,000 to hit our goal! That means we're 20% there, which is encouraging because that's a big piece of the pie and it shows how realistic and doable this really is, but it's also alarming because we now have only 10 days left to reach our goal by the money bomb date! We can make this a success if everyone who reads these words does just two things: 1) Pledge if you have not already done so, and 2) Do just one thing to promote the Rand Paul money bomb to other freedom-loving patriots.

Thanks so much and happy bombing!

I'll see you this August 20th on Rand Paul's donation page at RandPaul2010.

Libertarians say: Government (Regulation) Kills!

Ads by AdGenta

The old adage “the operation was a success, but the patient died” is never more true than when government gets into the healthcare business. The restrictions on midwives were and remain an excellent example.

Ever since the first licensing laws were passed well over a century ago, healthcare in America has not been part of a free market. Those laws were passed with pressure from one group of medical professionals to give them protection from competition. The laws had little to do with protecting patients’ health, and nothing to do with protecting their freedom to choose among medical practitioners.

Licensing laws were successful in killing the competition from midwives, but at the same time they harmed new mothers and their babies. Minority communities were especially affected, because they were denied the choice of alternative, less expensive, healthcare providers who were forced from business by the new regulations.

Collectivist Republicans Losing Their Fight?

Ads by AdGenta
For eight years, the only reasonable commentary on government policy came from the left. While George W. Bush was president, supporters of the Democratic Party correctly protested the evil war of aggression in Iraq, the abominable use of torture by our military and intelligence agencies, and the sinister aspect of our own government listening to our phone calls, reading our e-mails, and infiltrating our peaceful clubs and organizations as part of the tyrannical War on Terror. Regardless of their motivation, all of these criticisms from the left were valid. The Bush administration, especially while enjoying the support of a Republican majority in Congress, was one of the most damaging administrations to our liberty of any in recent memory. ...................The prospect of the present Democratic regime left unchallenged should horrify every sane person with any desire at all to live his own life and have any control over his future. For over a century, our conditioned response in times like these has been to run from one gang of thieves to the other. The Republicans are now on deck, warming up with the familiar big government program of military deficit spending, "compassionate conservative" welfarism, and their hypocritical pandering to the "Chrisitan Coalition." Four years of misery under the Democrats may be just enough to allow 51 percent of Americans to forget how bad the Bush years really were.

What if this time it were different? Instead of doing the same thing over again and expecting a different result, what if we let the Republicans die? They are gasping for air now, without a viable candidate for president and without a prayer of making up ground in the Congress. Their demise would be nothing unprecedented -- political parties have come and gone in America for most of our history. The Federalists, the Whigs, the Democratic-Republicans -- all of these put presidents into office but eventually went away. The demise of a political party in the United States is long overdue. Imagine if the libertarian wing of the Republican Party abandoned it, making it impossible for them to gain either the White House or a majority in Congress for the foreseeable future? That would spell the beginning of the end of the bipartisan tyranny that we have lived under for the past century.

Libertarians: Quit the War On Drugs—Cold Turkey

Members of the Libertarian Party applauded a recent opinion piece in the New York Times by Nicholas Kristof calling for an end to the War on Drugs. “This year marks the 40th anniversary of President Richard Nixon’s start of the war on drugs, and it now appears that drugs have won,” Kristof writes.

Last month, drug-tolerant Netherlands announced it was closing eight prisons because there wasn’t enough violent crime in the country. The United States is suffering no such shortage, with five times the rate of incarceration of the average developed country, even though its prison population prior to Richard Nixon’s declaration of the War on Drugs was comparable to that of the Netherlands.

Violence is not a legacy of drugs. It is a legacy of drug laws. Former LP candidate for Treasurer in California Less Antman notes, “A hundred years ago, nearly all Americans could buy alcohol and heroin at the general store with no restrictions or even prescriptions, yet rates of addiction were not much different than today. Some abstained, some used these items responsibly, and some misused them, just as happens now. But the streets were much safer, the government much smaller, and the businesses supplying these products didn’t need to be skilled at violence.”

Money bomb for Libertarian/Republican candidate Adam Kokesh

Ads by AdGenta
This is a money bomb for Adam Kokesh. He is a candidate for Congress and was endorsed by Ron Paul. So far 112 people have signed up for this money bomb.

Kokesh IVAW Peace Not War

The Adam Kokesh Promise

While I am asking for your financial support in this effort, I want to make it clear that I am willing to make the personal sacrifices necessary to raise the standard of our national leadership.

"If elected, I will not accept the Congressional salary of approximately $170,000, but only the national average income."

It is unbearable in these difficult times, for Congress to tell the American people what is best for us economically while they vote themselves another pay raise and burden our children with impossible debt. Enough is enough! — Adam Kokesh

Problems with universal healthcare plan

Michael D. Tanner, a Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute, has published some good criticisms recently of the health care policies taking shape in Washington. Take for instance his piece last Thursday over at the National Review, which begins:

"Drip by painful drip, the details of the Democratic health-care-reform plan have been leaking out. And from what we can see so far, it looks like bad news for American taxpayers, health-care providers, and, most important, patients...

The net result would be an unprecedented level of government control over one-sixth of the U.S. economy, and over some of the most important, personal, and private decisions in Americans’ lives."

Digg it. Rand Paul money bomb June 1st

Ads by AdGenta
Digg it here

Help make Rand Paul's run for Senate a reality by participating in and promoting the June 1st Rand Paul Money Bomb!

I'm sure there is a bigger money bomb on the horizon for later this summer, one that will be preceded and accompanied by extensive promotion from the highest leaders in the liberty movement (say for instance, Congressman Ron Paul), but in the meantime, let's give Rand's campaign a monetary and media boost by launching a little "mini-bomb" this June 1st.

The Goal of the June 1st Money Bomb

As of this writing (the afternoon of Saturday May 23, 2009), Rand Paul's website displays a donation total of $23,029 with what appears to be the goal of reaching $50,000. Let's get him there and then blow past the $50,000 mark on June 1st!

If 1000 people each give just $25 on June 1st, we will likely hit $50,000. Easy. If only twice that number- 2000 people- give $40 each, Rand Paul's exploratory committee will have raised over $100,000 in its first quarter (nay- first month!) of existence.

But in order for it to work, we have to give! And we have to promote this in as many ways as we can!

Why A June 1st Money Bomb?

Because Rand Paul is running for the U. S. Senate in Kentucky, which officially became a commonwealth and was admitted to the Union on June 1, 1792.

It's also the perfect time to get a quick little money bomb in early on to jump start Rand Paul's funding, garner state and national media attention, and get a viral Internet marketing campaign going. The more often Kentuckians hear Rand Paul's name, the better his chances of running, winning the Republican primary, and carrying the state.

This gives us a little over one week to promote this money bomb and make it a success. That is a long time on the Internet, plenty of time for this to go viral and succeed, but only if you help make it so with your dedicated promotion and your willingness to put your money where your mouse is this June 1st!

ALEXANDRIA, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Campaign for Liberty today delivered a coalition letter to the House of Representatives urging members to cosponsor H.R. 1207, the Federal Reserve Transparency Act of 2009. A copy also ran as a full-page color ad on A-5 of The Washington Times newspaper.

The bill, introduced by Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), would allow for a thorough one-time audit of our nation's powerful central bank.

61 groups including many highly prominent conservative, progressive and libertarian oriented organizations signed the letter, which was delivered by fax to every House office this morning. The signatories represent millions of Americans from every walk of life and across the political spectrum.

“This letter sends a powerful message to congressional leaders on both side of the aisle: The American People want a full and public audit of the Federal Reserve,” said Campaign for Liberty senior vice president Jesse Benton. “Every member of the House of Representatives should listen to their constituents and support this critical piece of legislation.”

To view the letter, visit http://www.campaignforliberty.com/campaigns/HR1207_Coalition_Letter.pdf

H.R. 1207 currently has 134 bipartisan cosponsors, forming a broad coalition of Representatives including Rep. Tom Price (R-GA), head of the conservative Republican Study Committee, and Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), former head of the liberal Progressive Caucus. Many influential congressional leaders have also cosponsored including Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-AL), ranking member of the Financial Services Committee, and Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-SD), a leader of the Blue Dog Democrat coalition. H.R. 1207 is building tremendous momentum as 79 cosponsors have joined since Congress came back into session April 2.

I just ran across this post at C4L. It is the introduction to Murray Rothbard's book "The case against the Fed". Originally published in 1994 after the last effort in 1993 to audit the Fed. It is a good read and if we can get enough people to digg it we may persuade others to pick up the book.

This is from campaignforliberty.com

Right now almost every Libertarian organization is working to get this show on FOX News. This will be our chance to grow the Libertarian media.

Thanks to MRoCkEd for the heads-up on the following message from Shelly Roche.

Shelly from Judge Napolitano's FreedomWatch has announced that the show is being considered for airing on TV:

You did it!! Thanks to your support, "Freedom Watch" with Judge Napolitano, Ron Paul, Peter Schiff, and more is FINALLY being considered for an open time slot on Fox News Channel.

They'll make the decision soon, and we're up against some big name shows, so we're not quite there yet. We need one more concerted effort to:

1. Flood them with emails requesting the show

and

2. Bump the viewcounts on YouTube AND the Fox website.

To Whom it May concern:

I am writing today to request that Judge Napolitano's Freedom Watch be given a chance to be aired on Fox News Channel.

There are so many people out there I believe that would watch it because there just aren't any shows that really cater to independent minded people like me who care about things like personal and economic freedom.

Having a show like this on television would really be exciting and I would definitely watch it and get my friends and family to watch it too. Fox would be opening up a whole new market and bring in lots of new viewers! Please put it on air!

Thank you!

THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR EFFORTS... This is the closest we've ever been to having our message heard by millions every week.

Libertarians launch alternative press outreach service

Ads by AdGenta
St. Louis, May 6 - In an age of short news cycles and fierce competition for media attention, America’s political parties have to move fast to “get the message out.” Members of the Libertarian Party launched a collaborative effort on Wednesday to maximize their party’s positive media exposure.

“Our goal is to produce timely, accurate press releases covering the Libertarian Party’s principles, positions and activities, then assist reporters by connecting them with knowledgeable interview subjects,” says Thomas L. Knapp, coordinator of the Center for Libertarian Press Information.

The group formed after a series of official party communiques which they believe inaccurately portrayed the Libertarian Party and fumbled important facts. “Instead of complaining, we decided to build a better mousetrap,” says Knapp, 42, of St. Louis, Missouri. “Libertarians tend toward self-reliance and personal responsibility. When we realized we couldn’t rely on our paid headquarters staff to get the job done, we sat down and put together a volunteer project to take care of business.” The Center is not controlled or endorsed by the Libertarian National Committee, the party’s governing body.

CLiPr.info’s operating plan includes a fast-moving review process designed to get releases out in hours rather than days without sacrificing accuracy of information or adherence to the party’s platform and statement of principles. “Our process gets a release into the field — on the wire services, on reporters’ desks, up on the web — in about four hours from proposal to proofreading and content review to finished product,” says Knapp.”

The Libertarian Party, founded in 1971, is America’s third largest political party. Hundreds of Libertarians serve in elected or appointed public office. The party’s presidential candidate, former US Representative Bob Barr of Georgia, received 523,686 votes in the 2008 election.

The Center for Libertarian Press Information’s web site is located at http://www.clipr.info.

Ron Paul's HR 1207 petition to Nancy Pelosi

Petition to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi

Ads by AdGenta

Whereas:The Federal Reserve refuses to give a public accounting of the TRILLIONS in recent taxpayer-backed loans; and
Whereas:Congress has the responsibility to force a public audit of the Federal Reserve, and the American people deserve to know how our tax dollars are being spent; and
Whereas:Allowing the Fed to remain out of control and shrouded in secrecy clearly allows for abuse and the continued stealing of our tax dollars through inflation and unaccounted electronic bank "loans"; and
Whereas:The Federal Reserve's abuses lead to economic crises like the current housing crisis, international banking crisis, and the resulting chaos; and
Whereas:The Federal Reserve System forces fuel, food, housing, medical care, and education costs upward, meaning that everyone who is NOT on the government dole is forced to make do with less as the value of money slowly decreases; and
Whereas:Congress has allowed the Federal Reserve to operate without sufficient oversight for too long;
Therefore:I urge you to schedule debate and a roll call vote on Ron Paul's Audit the Fed Bill, H.R. 1207.

lp.org Poll: Independents reject Obama, agree with Libertarian Party

I just read this on lp.org. I thought it was a good piece.

Poll: Independents reject Obama, agree with Libertarian Party

WASHINGTON -- Despite a deep financial crisis and the election of a left-wing president, political independents still see “big government” as a greater threat than “big business” by an unchanged two-to-one margin, America’s third-largest party notes today.......A Rasmussen Reports poll released Monday asked 1,007 adults “which of the following will be the biggest threat to the country in the future –”big business”, big labor or “big government?” Fifty-nine percent (59%) of politically independent Americans viewed “big government” as the greatest threat, virtually unchanged from the 60 percent measured the last time the question was asked in 2006 – before the financial crisis and election of Barack Obama.

CNN reports: "Authorities on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border blame drug cartels for a surge in violence in the region... Analysts point out that most of the violence is occurring along the U.S. border, particularly in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua and Tijuana. Drug cartel violence is also found on Mexico's western coast." Could the U.S. be to blame for some of this?

I am leaving Sunday's links up again today. If anyone is interested we need to get some more people doing the propeller links. Thanks.

I have been expecting to expand this list past just Digg. I am now adding propeller.com links. Propeller is a semi-popular social news site. Smaller then Digg but easier to influence. It only takes a minute to sign up. It works exactly like Digg.

Weekend update

First I want to thank all our new members. We now have 73 members. We are well on nour way.

For those of you who just joined the digg links from Thursday and Friday are still up. You can find them HERE.

I will have new digg links up Monday. If you have digg links you would like me to use this next week please just respond to this email. If you have a website or blog and would like to exchange links you can respond to this email.

Now for one last thing. I had one complaint about ads in the feed and site. First I don't use annoying ads (popunder, full page, peel etc). Second I spend at least a few hours every day working on this project (modifiying the site, finding links, and recruiting new members) and the ad revenue does not even come close to covering my time. Third I am a Capitalist as I am sure you are.

As always the best way to help this project grow is to invite people, use our share buttons, post about us. Anything you do is appreciated.
